Spanish Pronunciation
The ear is the natural organ of sound, and it is the ear, therefore, which must familiarize itself with the Spanish intonation and pronunciation before the tongue can imitate them.
Every language has its own peculiar intonation. It stands, so to say, in a certain key; is sung according to a certain melody. What color is to a picture, intonation is to a language.
The peculiarly sonorous inflection of Spanish voices cannot be described; it must be heard in order to be learned. That is why, training yourself in the recognition of Spanish sounds is very important and desirable.
That being said, to speak Spanish properly you need to know in first place the sounds of the vowels and consonants because Spanish has a strong corespondance between the sound of a letter and its spelling.
The Vowels
There are only five basic vowels and their correspondant five sounds in Spanish.
A /ah/
E /eh/
I /ee/
O /oh/
U /oo/
The consonant y sounds like the vowel i when it is at the end of a word and when it is used as the conjuction "and". For example:
hoy buey Ana y Mario
/oh-ee/ /boo-eh-ee/ /ah-nah/ /ee/ /mah-ree-oh/
The Consonants
There are some consonants in Spanish that are pronounced pretty similar to the consonants in English.
But, you will find a few differences in how some others are pronounced.
B, V These letters are pronounced the same like the English letter b.
C It is pronounced in two ways:
with the vowels a, o, u like /k/ <> ca /kah/, co /kho/, cu /koo/
with the vowels e, i like /s/ <> ce /seh/, ci /see/
G It sounds like the English letter g in the English word good
with the vowels a, o, u <> ga /gah/, go /goh/, gu /goo/
with the vowels e, i the vowel u is added, but mute to produce the same sound <> gue /geh/, gui /gee/
NOTE:
The vowel u in gue and gui combinations can be pronounced when they are marked with a diaeresis
güe /gooeh/: bilingüe
güi /gooee/: pingüino
The letter g also sounds like the pronunciation of the letter h in English
with the vowels e, i <> ge /Heh/, gi /Hee/
H It is a silent letter. It is never pronounced in Spanish except in English names like Hamilton.
J It sounds like the English letter h .
Q It sounds like the English letter k.
The vowel u is added, but mute to make the English k sound <> que /keh/, qui /kee/
These syllables are the only possible combinations.
S, Z These letters are pronounced the same like the English letter s.
Double Consonants
These consonants are considered single letters and each pair is pronounced as a singular sound.
ll It sounds like the y in the English word yahoo, except in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
rr It sounds like a strongly rolled r.
It is used only between vowels and never at the begining of a word.
The letter ñ
This is the more distinctive letter of the Spanish alphabet.
It sounds like the ny in the English word canyon.
For many learners this simple "letter by letter" approach to pronunciation will be enough to pronounce Spanish understandably and to sound like a native speaker.

Now to practice what you already know about the vowel and consonant sounds in Spanish, read and say the following tongue twisters "trabalenguas" as fast as you can. You can also practice them using rhymes "rimas", poetry "poesías", and riddles "adivinanzas".

POESÍAS (Poems)
Corre, corre ligerito
la autobomba sin parar,
se preparan los bomberos,
un incendio hay que apagar.
La manguera ya está lista,
pronto el agua llegará,
y sin miedo los bomberos
el incendio apagarán.
Tiene telas a montones,
una tijera afilada
y montañas de botones
para coser apurada.
La modista sentadita,
cose y cose sin parar,
vestiditos, camisitas,
todo listo para usar.
Con cuántos colores
llegó ese señor.
Está en mi casa,
Don Juan el pintor.
Trae muchos pinceles,
gorro y escalera,
rodillos, pinturas,
Don Juan si se esmera.
Con el balde y la cuchara
el abañil la mezcla prepara.
Un ladrillo, una baldosa,
el albañil ya hizo la losa.
Me duele la garganta,
ya me resfrié,
debo cuidarme mucho,
ya me enfermé.
Me voy donde el doctor,
él me examinará,
y que saque la lengua,
seguro me dirá.
¡Dedo mayor!
Al cuatro por señalar,
dedo índice lo han de llamar.
El cinco listo a fugar,
es el gordito dedo pulgar.
